Lesson 5. Dividing negative numbers

For division, the rules are the same as for multiplication.

EXAMPLES:

20 ÷ (–2) = –10

–40 ÷ (–20) = 2

–12 ÷ –3 = –4

Order of operation.

Everyone has agreed to work out problems in the same order so that there is only one correct answer.

The table below shows the order.

Remember the word  ‘BODMAS’  (the  ‘O’ is just used to make a word)

EXAMPLES:

14 – 6 ÷ 2

= 14 – 3

= 11

(14 – 6) ÷ 2

= 8 ÷ 2

= 4
