Lesson 9. Dividing whole numbers with remainder

DIVISON Is a division problem worked differently from addition, subtraction, and multiplication problems?
Yes. In division, you work from left to right, not from right to left! You also have to learn some terms that are used when solving a division problem. The number to be divided is called the dividend. The number that goes into the dividend is called the divisor. The answer is called the quotient, and it shows the number of times the divisor goes into the dividend. The remainder is anything left over when you are finished.
Remember…
Your remainder must be less that the divisor. If it is not, go back and check your work.

EXAMPLE:
To divide, look at the highest place value, the digit at the left of the dividend. Are there any divisors in that number? In this case, the answer is no, there are no 4s in 1. Now look at the two highest place values in the dividend. Are there any 4s in 19? Yes, there are 4 of them. Write that number as the first digit of the quotient. Then multiply that number by the divisor and write the product under the dividend. Draw a line, and subtract. Bring down the next digit from the dividend. Repeat that process until you’re left with a number that cannot be divided by the divisor.
