Lesson 21. Eventual decimal fractions

Decimal place values.

The digit after the decimal point shows tenths.

EXAMPLE

0.1 the 1 means  1/10
0.6 the 6 means  6/10
27.8 the 8 means  8/10

The second digit after the decimal point shows hundredths

EXAMPLE

0.01 the 1 means  1/100
27.18 the 8 means  8/100

The third digit after the decimal point shows thousandths

EXAMPLE

0.001 the 1 means  1/1000
0.006 the 6 means  6/1000
27.348 the 8 means  8/1000

Decimals have place values too. Look at this place-value chart. The number in the chart is 29.623. Read in like this: twenty-nine and six hundred twenty-three thousandths.
EXAMPLE 

The 3 in the number
12.731 means 3/100.

Changing decimals into fraction.

EXAMPLES:

If you change a decimal into a fraction, cancel the fraction if you can.

EXAMPLES:
Changing fractions into decimals.

If you can find an equivalent fraction with the denominator (bottom part) equal to 10, 100 or 1000, in will be easier to find the decimal value.

EXAMPLES:

Change denominator to 10.
Change denominator to 100.
Change denominator to 1000.

Ordering decimals

Write the set of decimals in a line with the decimal points in a column. Fill in any empty spaces with zeros. This makes it easier to compare the decimals.

EXAMPLES:

Arrange 0.29, 0.209, 0.09 and 0.2 in order, starting with the smallest.
