Lesson 7. Percentage of a number

EXAMPLE:

Work out, to the nearest penny:

6% of 12.99
= 0.7794 = £0.78,

to the nearest penny.

Percentage increase and decrease.

Find the given percentage then ‘add on’ for ‘increase’ or ‘subtract’ for ‘decrease

EXAMPLE:

Increase £70 by 10%

10% of 70 = 70 ÷ 10
= 7
EXAMPLE:

Decrease £90 by 20%

20% of 90 = (90 ÷ 10) × 2
= 18
VAT is Added Tax. It is extra money that must be paid when buying many goods. The money is used by the Government to help run the country. It is usually 17.5%.

EXAMPLE:

A printer cost £250 + VAT. If VAT is 17.5%, work out how much the printer costs altogether.

17.5% of 250 = (250 ÷ 100) × 17.5 = 43.75

add the tax printer cost

250 + 43.75 = £293.75.
